For the next step in best practices evolution Alexei will concentrate on the new features of file recovery in FileMaker Pro 10, including what the various options do and don't do, and when you might want to use them. Most importantly, we will discuss the FileMaker developer's new best friend: recover.log, which can yield important insight into database corruption and what to do about it.

Lynn Allen will share a nice little trick using field comments, indirection and conditional formatting to have self-labeling fields on the layout. She will also review and expand upon the "fields as mini-calculators" tip she briefly touched on last meeting.

Jonathan Reff will demonstrate an interesting technique for storing temporary information in global variables. An example would be keeping track of what the user has selected in different windows. In some cases, this can effectively give you variables that are scoped to the window - something that FileMaker doesn't provide natively.

Last but not least, our first-ever FMDiSC Extended Networking Event. We see each other at meetings. We read each others' posts online. But how well do we know one another? Can we put together the name, the face, and the post? Do we know each other's skill sets in case we need help? This month, we will conduct a special networking session to learn more about our members. We will explore questions like: What are your strongest skills? What do you most enjoy doing as a FileMaker Developer? Do you want help with your development work or your business? What do you least like doing as a developer? What would you like to share with others that makes you unique?

You will not want to miss this opportunity to let others know more about you, and to learn even more about the amazing resources within our group.

This week, Phil Goodman will present a project management database for Kaiser Permanente that handles every piece of collateral that goes through their Marketing Communications department. It's used state-wide by about 200 people and handles about 7000-8000 projects annually. It replaces a solution originally started in FileMaker Pro 4 about 10 years ago and later upgraded to FileMaker 6. Using modern FileMaker techniques and features, it addresses their workflow needs ranging from project conception through creative development, delivery and internal financial tracking.

Then, Bob Shockey will show off a non-profit solution that solved some unique challenges by streamlining screen design. This includes a special bonus "cheat" for solving odd page-break problems for long, single-record printouts.

After that, we will be having a roundtable on the recession. Has the recession been affecting your business? Has it been affecting your clients? Has it actually opened up new opportunities? Anton Anderson will chair a round-table on how we're all dealing with the current economic times.

Then, we'll finish our meeting with a quick discussion of the DevCon sessions: What's hot. What's not.

Here is our tentative schedule of events (all times subject to change):

9:30-9:50 Setup/Breakfast/Networking
9:50-10:00 Welcome and Housekeeping

1pm, run in circles, scream and shout.

1. Deryk True: Acrobat document distribution:
Data Gathering for FileMaker - Sometimes the most challenging part of data management is gathering the data. Deryk will present a case study of collecting large amounts of data from 650 locations, replacing an older paper-to-manual-input system. The tool was the latest version of Acrobat, using a new feature to distribute forms and then collect the responses in a low-cost and IT-independent manner.

2. Ralf Mandt-Rauch: Applescript, web, iCal integration
There has been a dearth of ecommerce solutions available to the Mac community. Ralf will present a brief overview of his company's new program, called eShox. It contains an online store called eShox Store which utilizes PHP and MySQL and an eShox Manager built in FileMaker Pro. He'll be concentrating on the seamless integration with the Mac OS and demonstrating how data is interchanged between the eShox Manager and Address Book using Applescript.

3. John Maxwell: web viewer data scraping
John will be demonstrating the process of scraping html code from web viewers, parsing the data, and populating fields with the data.

4. Tips and Tricks
Dave Knight, Bob Shockey, Christopher Gauntt and Dina Torok will show various tips on subtle, cool, value-list tricks: Set Field by Name allowing the removal of a big chunk of code from layouts; a trick to allow changing the background color of any object just by hovering the mouse pointer over it;
a cool custom function used to turn script parameters into local variables in a subscript.

Thanks to Ralf Mandt-Rauch for providing food for the meeting.

April 2009 Meeting Announcement

Hello again, FMDiSC members and FileMaker enthusiasts!

Our next meeting for FileMaker Developers in Southern California (FMDiSC) will be this Friday, April 10th, from 9:30AM to 1:00PM.  If you've never been to one of our meetings before, just feel free to show up -- no need to RSVP.  We'd love to see you at the meeting!  New members are always welcome!

Our first presentation ALWAYS starts PROMPTLY at 10:00 AM SHARP, so please do not come late or you will MISS something very important!  To accommodate for this, we'll be doing some quick housekeeping announcements at 9:50am and then we'll immediately dive into our first presentation PROMPTLY at 10:00am SHARP.

This month, we are continuing our analysis of FileMaker 10 because we STILL haven't had enough time to cover all the new features of this wonderful new release! Plus, we have some other treats in store for you as well.

Anton Anderson of Productivity Consulting will be presenting his SubSummary Report Extravaganza, where Anton will highlight the new "live reporting" subsummary features in FileMaker 10. This one new feature alone will make you rethink all the reports you've ever created in older versions of FileMaker! You will not want to miss Anton's excellent presentation on this topic.

Debbie Cohen-Sitt of The Database Factory will then take the stage as she discusses the new Saved Finds feature of FileMaker 10. Debbie will show us how to smartly use this feature, along with some tips & tricks for making "Saved Finds" work more effectively than you could imagine... and some gotchas to be aware of.

Bill Krauss of Angel City Data will be presenting a case study on a FileMaker music licensing system with iTunes integration. Bill Krauss will talk about taking a client from a simple request ("Can you help us track songs and CDs?") to a full-blown production and financial tracking and invoicing system, complete with iTunes integration.

Tips & Tricks, part 1: Joe Gold will be showing off a pong game that he created with the hottest new gaming platform of the 21st Century -- FileMaker Pro! This one is pretty impressive, folks... a fully working game of pong developed solely in FileMaker Pro. Anyone want to create Pac Man in FileMaker for the next meeting?

- Tips & Tricks, part 2: Your chance to show off a FileMaker tip or trick!
At the end of the meeting, time permitting, we will have an "open mike" section where you can show off your own tips & tricks. If you'd like to share any tips, techniques, or cool ideas that you have developed, this is your chance! If you have a sample file that you'd like to show, bring it on a USB flash drive and try to keep your presentation under 5 minutes in length!

- And, we will continue our extended socializing time during the break, for all of your socializing & networking needs!

Here is our tentative schedule of events (all times subject to change):

9:30 - 9:50 Setup/Breakfast/Networking
9:50 - 10:00 Welcome and Housekeeping
10:00 - 10:45 SubSummary Report Extravaganza with Anton Anderson
